Michelle Longmire began her career as a physician scientist specializing in dermatology at
Stanford University, where she later completed her fellowship in biomedical research. Most of her work focused on immunology and clinical trial design, which is what opened her eyes to the inefficiencies of biomedical research, which she saw as potential.
As a physician, she saw how many patients were excluded from participating in clinical trials because of geography, schedule, or lack of access to an academic medical center. Looking at the data through the lens of a scientist, she saw that the data they were collecting didn’t tell the full story because it lacked the diversity and scale to be a representation of the real world. That’s when she started asking herself “what if the clinical trial could come to the patient?” which motivated her to found her company.
Even thinking about bringing the clinical trial to the patient represents a different approach to clinical trials, where they aren’t site-centric, but person-centric. This comes as part of a larger shift in healthcare toward becoming person-centric, where a patient is an active participant in their own care rather than a passive recipient in a provider-driven model.
Medable is now one of the most widely adopted platforms for decentralized trials, powering research across over 60 countries and 300 clinical trials. Under her leadership, Medable has raised $500 million in venture capital and has been recognized by Fast Company as one of the world’s most creative companies.
